We work with so many amazing owners who are ROCKING their businesses, so I wanted to share some of the traits I see again and again in these successful owners!
#1 They know EXACTLY who their customer is and are not trying to sell to everyone. They are laser-focused on who they want to serve.
Just a few examples that spring to mind: focused on plus size, specializing in party clothes or swimwear, focused on one type of item, catering to people who enjoy outdoor activities, children’s clothes, and busy moms. Successful boutique owners know who their people are.
#2 They want feedback so they can improve.
They don’t take feedback as personal criticism! (because hey, you don’t know what you don’t know!)
Yeah, no one wants to hear their website needs work, but how will you ever improve and compete on the next level if you can’t handle feedback?
#3 They look for ways to make themselves stand out
What do you want to be known for? How can you stand out in your niche? What can you offer that’s different or special? Successful boutique owners know the answers to these questions!
#4 They’re always learning and trying to improve.
Passionate owners are passionate about improving their businesses and are always looking to expand their skill sets. This also includes training their staff to improve their skills!
#5 Successful owners focus on what they can control and don’t give energy to what they cannot.
This is a BIG one. Sure, we can blame COVID, say people don’t have money, or no one is buying. We can blame the economy, our competition, or even our customers, and you know where that will get us? That’s right - absolutely nowhere.
Focus on what YOU can control - don’t get caught up in that blame game, you’ll only end up feeling hopeless.
#6 They know when to ask for help.
It’s true that anyone can build an online store, but the reality is that when you’re ready to compete with bigger stores, you need to bring your A-game. That’s where we come in.
The same goes for any area of business. Successful owners know they can’t possibly know everything but know when to ask for help and guidance.
#7 They keep their branding consistent and easy to recognize.
Successful owners know the power of consistent branding!
#8 They connect and learn from the boutique community instead of trying to figure out everything alone.
This ain’t a solo race! We’re all in this boutique adventure together, and successful boutique owners know that.
#9 They spend their time on the revenue-generating activities that ARE and have worked (even a little) and stop spending time on anything not producing results.
#10 They create a community and an experience.
Your people are looking for more than just clothes and accessories, right? They want to feel like they are a part of something. Successful owners make buying from their store a complete experience.
#11 They rethink their buying and markdown strategies to make sure they aren’t sitting on capital.
#12 And last but perhaps most importantly, They keep showing up.
You have to show up if you want to make anything happen - that’s the bottom line. Even on the hard days. Especially on the hard days, actually.
So! What do you think of this list? What did I miss? What have you done - or seen other boutique owners doing - that makes them successful?
I’d love to know what you think!!!
XOXO, Angela
