Should I Ship Just Within The US Or Offer Worldwide?

So you’re wondering whether you should ship just within the USA or offer your boutique goodies to international customers? We’re here to help!

This decision depends on your business goals, target market, shipping costs, and logistics. If you are just starting out, we suggest you keep shipping within the USA, at least initially. This will make things easier for you and help you get into the swing of things while you learn the ins and outs of shipping (and everything else!).

Why Consider International Shipping?

If you have a global customer base or want to expand your business internationally, it may be worthwhile to offer international shipping. It’s actually very simple to ship internationally on Shopify, so don’t be afraid of this. But remember that if you do offer international shipping and you will be shipping products out of the country, you should clearly communicate that it may take a little bit longer so that your customers know what to expect.

How to Enable International Shipping on Shopify

To ship internationally from your Shopify store, you first need to enable international shipping in your shipping settings. You can do this by going to your Shopify admin panel, clicking on “Settings” and then selecting “Shipping and delivery”. From there, you can add international shipping rates and customize your shipping options based on the destinations you want to ship to.

To make sure that your customers are aware of international shipping times and costs, clearly communicate this information on your website and during the checkout process. You may also want to consider using a carrier service specializing in international shipping to make the process smoother and more efficient.

Pros of International Shipping

  • Increased Customer Base: you can expand your customer base beyond your domestic market and reach a global audience.
  • Increased Revenue: With a larger customer base, you have the potential to increase your revenue and grow your business.
  • Competitive Advantage: Offering international shipping can give you a competitive advantage over other businesses that only ship domestically.
  • Diversification: By expanding into international markets, you can diversify your business and reduce your reliance on a single market.

Cons of International Shipping

  • Higher Shipping Costs: International shipping can be more expensive than domestic shipping due to longer distances and additional customs fees.
  • Longer Delivery Times: International shipping can take longer than domestic shipping, which can lead to customer dissatisfaction (which is why communication about shipping times is absolutely crucial!)
  • Customs and Regulations: International shipping requires compliance with customs regulations, which can be complex and time-consuming.
  • Language and Cultural Barriers: International shipping may require communication with customers in different languages and cultures, which can be challenging.

Next Steps for International Shipping...

Overall, international shipping can be a great way to expand your business and reach new customers, but it’s important to carefully consider the costs and logistics involved before making the decision to offer it.

You may want to test the waters first by offering international shipping to a select few countries and then expand as your business grows. Some of the most popular countries for e-commerce businesses to ship to include Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, and France. These countries have large populations, high internet penetration rates, and strong economies, making them attractive markets for e-commerce businesses.

Of course, it’s important to research and analyze your business goals and target market before deciding which countries to focus on.
