Shopify 101: Setting up a Shop by Size Dropdown Menu

Ready to spill the tea on optimizing your Shopify store to help your customers find their perfect size with ease. One of our most popular requests is creating a "Shop by Size" dropdown menu, and guess what? It's simpler than you think!

In this blog, we're diving deep into how to create automated size collections in Shopify, set the right rules, and add these collections to your menu. Plus, we'll sprinkle in some SEO tips to make sure your boutique shines in search results.

Let's get this party started! 🎉

Why "Shop by Size" Matters

Before we jump into the nitty-gritty, let's talk about why a "Shop by Size" menu is a game-changer for your boutique. Your customers are busy, and they want to find items that fit them without scrolling endlessly. A size-specific menu enhances their shopping experience, reduces returns, and boosts your conversion rates. Happy customers = more sales! 🤑

Step 1: Create Automated Size Collections

Understanding Collections in Shopify

Collections in Shopify are like categories. They help you organize your products so customers can easily find what they're looking for. Automated collections are dynamic and update automatically based on rules you set. For our "Shop by Size" menu, we'll use automated collections to display only items in stock for each size.

Setting Up Your Size Collections

Here’s how to create your automated size collections in Shopify:

  1. Log in to your Shopify Admin: Head to your Shopify admin panel and navigate to the "Products" section. Click on "Collections."

  2. Create a New Collection: Click the "Create collection" button.

  3. Name Your Collection: Name your collection after the size it will represent (e.g., "Size S," "Size M," etc.).

  4. Set Collection Conditions:

    • Match products where: All conditions must be met.
    • Product variant’s title starts with: Enter the first letter of the size (e.g., "S" for Size S, "M" for Size M).
    • Inventory stock must be greater than: Enter "0".
  5. Save Your Collection: Once you’ve set the conditions, save your collection.

Repeat these steps for each size you offer. Now, Shopify will automatically include all in-stock items for each size in the respective collections. 🚀

Example Collection Rules

For "Size S" collection:

  • Variant’s title starts with S
  • Inventory stock must be greater than 0

For "Size M" collection:

  • Variant’s title starts with M
  • Inventory stock must be greater than 0

And so on for each size you offer. Easy peasy, right?

Step 2: Add "Shop by Size" to Your Main Menu

Now that you have your collections set up, it's time to make them accessible to your customers by adding them to your main menu.

Setting Up the Menu

  1. Navigate to Online Store: In your Shopify admin, go to "Online Store" and then "Navigation."

  2. Edit Main Menu: Click on "Main menu" to edit it.

  3. Add "Shop by Size": Click "Add menu item." Name it "Shop by Size" and choose to link it to either all products or a custom page showcasing new arrivals and size guides.

  4. Nest Your Size Collections: Under the "Shop by Size" menu item, add each size collection as a sub-menu item. Simply click "Add menu item," enter the size name (e.g., "Size S"), and link it to the corresponding collection.

  5. Save Your Menu: Once you've added all sizes, save your menu.

Your customers can now effortlessly shop by their size directly from the main menu. 🎯

Step 3: Optimize Your Size Collections and Menu for SEO

Now that your "Shop by Size" menu is set up, let's make sure it’s optimized for search engines. SEO helps your boutique appear in relevant searches, driving more traffic to your store.

Keyword Research

Start with keyword research. Use tools like Google Keyword Planner, to find keywords related to boutique clothing, shopping by size, and Shopify stores. Look for keywords with high search volume and low competition.

Optimize Collection Titles and Descriptions

  1. Collection Titles: Include keywords in your collection titles. For example, "Shop Size S Clothing" or "Boutique Size M Outfits."

  2. Collection Descriptions: Write detailed descriptions for each size collection. Include relevant keywords naturally. Describe the types of clothing available, highlight popular items, and emphasize the ease of finding the perfect fit.

Optimize Menu and URL Structure

  1. Menu Items: Use descriptive menu names. Instead of just "Shop by Size," use "Shop by Size - Find Your Perfect Fit."

  2. URLs: Ensure your URLs are clean and include keywords. For example, /collections/size-s or /shop-by-size/size-m.

Create SEO-Friendly Content

  1. Blog Posts: Write blog posts around popular keywords. Topics could include "How to Shop for Your Perfect Size Online" or "Top Trends in Size S Clothing for 2024."

  2. Product Descriptions: Ensure all product descriptions are unique, detailed, and include relevant keywords.

Utilize Internal Linking

Link to your size collections from other parts of your website. For example, in a blog post about summer fashion trends, link to your "Size S" and "Size M" collections.

Extra Tips to Enhance Your Boutique's Shopping Experience

Customer Reviews and Testimonials

Encourage customers to leave reviews. Positive reviews build trust and can be a deciding factor for new customers. Feature testimonials on your homepage and product pages.

High-Quality Images

Use high-resolution images for all products. Provide multiple views and include size charts. Customers are more likely to buy when they can see details clearly.

Size Guides

Create comprehensive size guides and make them easily accessible. Include measurements and tips on how to measure accurately.

Responsive Design

Ensure your website is mobile-friendly. Many customers shop on their phones, and a responsive design enhances their experience.

Email Marketing

Send personalized emails based on customer preferences. If a customer frequently buys size M, send them alerts about new arrivals in that size.

Social Media Integration

Promote your size collections on social media. Use Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest to showcase outfits and link directly to your collections.

Customer Support

Offer excellent customer support. Provide live chat options and detailed FAQs to assist customers with sizing questions.

Analyze and Adjust

Regularly review your Shopify analytics. Look at customer behavior, popular products, and sales trends. Adjust your collections and strategies based on data.
